Be conscious of cause when attending rallies

This weekend, the Green Energy Team, Western Illinois University's most active unofficial organization, hosted their first annual Green Fest on Murray Street.

Anyone who attended the freshman event, or anyone who just walked past, knows it was massive. What started out at 11 a.m. with a couple dozen students fighting through their hangovers soon grew into a crowd of a couple hundred people.

For those who don't already know, the Green Energy Team is a non-profit organization that is working to provide low-income families in Macomb with state-of-the-art solar solutions such as photovoltaic panels. By donating these panels, GET plans to assist these families financially, while simultaneously fighting the global energy crisis.

In order to fund this tremendous project, GET has established a functioning recycling program, free of charge to all participants, with all proceeds going into creating the photovoltaic panels.

According to www.greenenergyteam.org, GET already has over 40 collection units at various Greek houses and private homes all over Macomb, and they plan to put their recycling program into operation throughout campus within the year.

The Green Energy Team went all out for Green Fest 2009. They were able to get bands from out of town like Zmick and National Rifle, and they also made sure to employ the area favorites like Storefront Lawyers and Polymer Division, among others.

Aside from the full day of eclectic live music, there was a raffle and even an area for patrons to play bags. When people needed to answer the call of nature, there was an on-site port-a-potty, and when they were hungry, they could buy a hotdog for a dollar.

Even though the Macomb Police Department broke up the shindig after a noise complaint, it was still a good time, and I have the sunburn to prove it. Overall, GET put on a pretty successful event, and their efforts have most certainly not been put forth in vain.

The only thing I really didn't care for was the majority of the patrons who attended this awesome, well-intentioned festival.

Thank you for providing more information about this group. The five Ws were almost all covered. If I wanted to donate/contribute recyclable materials where would I find the drop off points. (Continued…)
