Jamie Goss went 5-for-6 at the plate to lead Western in the doubleheader sweep of Saint Louis on Wednesday evening at The Billikens Sports Center.
"The girls did a great job of looking for their pitch and driving the ball," said head coach Holly Van Vlymen. "(Freshman first baseman) Jamie Goss had a great day at the plate, and it was exciting to hear the girls cheering her on when she got up to bat since she got a hit at every at bat except the last one in the second game."
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Westerwinds (14-14) defeated the Billikens (11-19), 4-0. Western was able to take the second game of the day by a score of 11-6 to move to .500 on the season.
Game 1: Western Illinois 4, Saint Louis 0.
In the first win of the day, the game remained scoreless until the top of the fourth as Goss started the inning with a single down the left-field line. After a Lauren Furgala fly out to center field and Erin Schlotfeldt strikeout, Ashley Campbell hit an RBI triple to right-center field to give Western its first lead of the game, 1-0.
Goss got the offense going again in the top of the sixth with a double to left-center field. After a Furgala walk and a Schlotfeldt strikeout, Campbell collected her second RBI of the game on a single up the middle to score the first run of the inning.
On the next Western at bat, Lori Pankratz hit a single between the Billiken third baseman and short stop to score Furgala for the second run of the inning. Michelle Neubauer drove in the final run of the inning on a RBI single down the left-field line, scoring Campbell and making the score 4-0 in favor of the Westerwinds.
Western out hit Saint Louis, 9-4, and did not commit a single error in the winning effort.
"I was really happy to see the girls come out and play hard in these mid-week games," Van Vlymen said. "We had some great clutch hitting today in two occasions when we were down two outs in the inning."
Goss led the offense with four hits and one run while Campbell chipped in with two hits, an RBI and a run.
