"Loveline" began in 1983 with DJ Jim "Poorman" Trenton. After a year, the radio station added a segment called "Ask a Surgeon," hosted by Pinsky, where he answered medical questions from listeners.
The show became such a success that it went from airing only on Sunday nights to five nights a week. In August, 1993, Trenton was replaced by Rikki Rachtman, who was in turn replaced by Adam Carolla. By April 1996, with Carolla and Pinsky, the show's popularity developed so greatly it was optioned as a series for MTV. "Loveline" aired on MTV for five years, until 2000.
The radio program is now syndicated by Westwood One to over 100 radio stations across the country and broadcasted on www.lovelineshow.com. The show maintains its primary goal to help youth and young adults with relationship, sexuality and drug addiction problems.
The March 10 event, titled "Loveline with Dr. Drew," is an additional effort of youth advocation by Pinsky, and will follow the same question-and-answer format as his radio show.
Pinsky will begin with a brief presentation regarding healthy relationships and following that, the floor will be open to students for questions or comments.
Following the program, there will be a signing for Pinsky's newest book "The Mirror Effect," which will be available in the University Union Bookstore.
Co-chair of the university theme committee Dr. Colin Harbke stated students should develop an "appreciation of how the relationships we have with others contribute to our own health and wellness" following the presentation.
Admission to the event is free, but there is a limited amount of seating, so students are asked to arrive early. "Loveline with Dr. Drew" will begin at 7 p.m.
