More than 70 students, faculty and members of the Macomb community volunteered to have their heads shaved for Tanner Hall's annual St. Baldrick's Day fundraiser Sunday, March 1.
This year, the event raised over $3,000 from online donations and more than $7,839.97 total.
"We had our whole staff out there to help this year," said Tina Mahoney, manager of Michael's Hair Designers. "This event is a great way to see how people have compassion for children. A second grader at Lincoln school recently found out he had cancer, so a few of his classmates came in to shave their heads. This is the first time we have seen children donate hair."
This is the third year that Michael's Hair Designers have volunteered to cut hair for St. Baldrick's. Mahoney brought her twin boys to the event to have their heads shaved.
Tina Stowick, a sophomore law enforcement and justice administration major was one of three girls to go bald. She has personal connections to the effects of cancer and felt it was important for her to do.
"My aunt had passed away from cancer so I did this for her," Stowick said.
Mahoney was the barber that shaved Stowick's head.
"It was emotional to see someone come in and donate all of their hair like she did," Mahoney said.
"You get people who come in here with personal stories or just because they know it is for a good cause," Mahoney continued. "There have been many girls who have gotten their heads shaved with hair just as long as Tina's."
Mark Carbonara, Tanner Hall assistant complex director, shaved his head for the very first time.
"This year I am the event organizer for St. Baldrick's, so I helped put it together," Carbonara said. "I thought as long as I was the organizer I would participate as well. It was a great thing to experience, and I am glad I did it."
