A test of the Western Emergency Alert System will begin at 10:50 a.m. Wednesday, March 4.

If you receive a call from the test, you do not need to take any action. When you receive the call, you may simply listen to the test message and hang up when it has concluded.

The message used for the test will be: "This is a test of the WIU Emergency Alert System. For more information, please visit http://www.wiu.edu/alertsystem. This is only a test."

According to Dana Biernbaum, assistant vice president of administrative services, the test message will be delivered to every phone number and e-mail address in the WEAS emergency contact database.

The WEAS is designed to notify Western students and employees at both the Macomb and Quad Cities campuses of emergency situations like severe weather, or serious threats to safety via voice, text and e-mail messages. The university will only activate the system for emergency purposes.

Students and employees are strongly encouraged to review and update their emergency contact information through STARS or WIUP.

For more information on WEAS, review the Frequently Asked Questions at www.wiu.edu/ alert system or contact the Office of the Vice President at VPAS@wiu.edu.
