Despite receiving double-digit point totals from seniors Amanda Walker and Nicole Myers, the Western Illinois women's basketball team lost to IPFW, 55-51, at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center.

A three-pointer from Anne Boese with 2:17 seconds left in the game would give the Mastodons (3-17, 2-7 Summit League) a one-point lead at 49-48.

After IPFW hit four straight free throws, a deep three-pointer from Walker with 25 seconds left on the clock brought the Westerwinds (6-14, 4-5 Summit League) within two points at 53-51.

Jordan Zuppe connected on just one-of-two free throws, giving Western a shot for the tie. Walker's three-point shot with nine seconds left in the game came up just short and Zuppe nailed a free throw with seven seconds remaining to clinch the game for the Mastodons.

After the two teams traded baskets for the first seven minutes of the game, a three-point play from junior Jordon O'Brien put the Westerwinds up 9-6 with 12:14 remaining in the first half.

Back-to-back three-pointers from Sarah Haluska and Boese gave IPFW a five-point lead at 16-11 with 5:15 remaining on the clock.

A pair of free throws from Eva Ivanova gave IPFW its largest lead of the game of eight points (21-13) with 2:52 left before the half.

Walker would score Western's final five points of the half. A lay-up from Walker cut the Mastodon's lead to five points at 23-18 heading into the break.

After trading baskets to open the second half, the Westerwinds went on a 7-0 run, capped off by a jumper from O'Brien with 17:52 left in the second half.

A lay-up from Ivanova gave the Mastodons a four-point lead, but the Westerwinds answered with an 8-4 run capped off by another Walker bucket from beyond the arc, giving the Westerwinds a two-point lead (40-38) with 9:52 left in the game.

"It comes down to letting Ivanova catch the ball down low in the post," said head coach Leslie Crane. "Preventing her from doing that comes down to having some backbone and playing with some effort."
