The Leathernecks will conclude the 2008 season Saturday when they square off against Youngstown State at Hanson Field.
The 'Necks are coming off a thrilling overtime victory on senior day against the Redbirds of Illinois State. The Penguins have some players returning and will pose a challenge to the 'Necks.
"They have a lot of players coming back, and some from injury and some will be back for our game," said head coach Don Patterson. "We recognize that we are going to be seeing Youngstown with reinforcement of players that haven't been able to contribute and we recognize that those players would like to do so."
In the last meeting between the two programs, Western was on the losing end of the totem pole, suffering a 31-24 defeat in Youngstown. The 'Necks are hosting the unranked team, which may serve as an advantage.
Senior running back Herb Donaldson has accomplished so much on the football field and has a chance to put his name on yet another record this weekend.
With 205 yards, Donaldson will become the all-time leading rusher in Missouri Valley history. The 'Necks will try to ensure he captures this crown as well.
"I think it means a lot to Herb; he is already the school's leading rusher and that says a lot because we have had a lot of great backs play here," Patterson said. "But truthfully, Herb's all about wins and losses; he would be happier with a win this weekend than breaking the conference rushing record and losing another game. It's presumptuous on our part to suspect that we can somehow pile up a ton of yards on Herb's behalf. We are just going to run the offense and whatever happens, happens; but the focus is to win the game."
In addition to Donaldson, senior linebacker Jason Williams also has a chance to set a new standard in the Missouri Valley as well as the FCS with another forced fumble.
Last week, Williams broke the record with 14 in a career, and he now has an opportunity to lead all of Division I with one more forced fumble. The senior is still in contention for the Buchanan Award for the best defensive player in the football subdivision.
Western outscores the Penguins by more than 10 points per game and Youngstown also allows nearly 200 yards per game on the ground, which could set the table for a record-setting day in the last game of the season.
