The Gwendolyn Brooks Dance Troupe is a talented and diverse group of dancers.

The troupe puts on two performances a year, with one per semester. The show will be today at 7:30 p.m., with doors opening at 7 p.m., in the University Union Grand Ballroom and is free to enter.

This semester's show, titled "Novelty N Motion," should be entertaining to a variety of people. The show will have a diverse range of dances, ranging from modern and contemporary to jazz, hip-hop and reggae.

Jamillah Bivins, junior social work major and president of the GBCC Dance Troupe, wants people to come to the show because the troupe performs "a variety of dances and is very entertaining."

The troupe puts on a different type of show compared to the other dance teams on campus. The troupe works hard all semester to put on a great performance, and GBCC dance shows are filled with unique and original choreography. Members of the troupe work hard during breaks to choreograph dances that showcase the individual talents of all the dancers.

Student turnout for the show has gone down in the past, but according to Bivins, the number of people in the audience has been increasing over the past year.

"A bigger turnout is always better," she said.

For students who do not know about the GBCC Dance Troupe, they are a group of individuals who strive to show diversity and portray aspects of black culture in their concerts.

Sophomore nursing major and dance troupe member Keianna Miller described her experience as part of the troupe as freeing, saying, "When you're free and dancing, you can be whoever you want to be."

A lot of work goes into the GBCC Dance Troupe concerts besides all the dancing. Troupe members work with members of Western Technical Services, a student-run sound, light and projection service that is the largest production service in West Central Illinois.

WESTEC sets up the stage and works with the choreographers to create a phenomenal light show to accompany each dance.

Students at Western are always looking for entertainment, and as the end of the semester draws near, the GBCC Dance Troupe provides free entertainment to the many students short on cash.
