'Winds recognized for hitting the books

The National Fastpitch Coaches Association recognized 10 Western Illinois softball players for earning a grade point average of a 3.5 or higher during the 2007-08 academic year.
Britt Mason is the only player in the group who is not returning due to graduation. The Westerwinds will return Anna Nelson, Beth Golitko, Lauren Furgala, Colleen Biebel, Nikki Marinec, Lori Pankratz, Courtney Jacobson, Erin Schlotfeldt and Julie DePolo for another successful season on and off the field.
The Westerwinds won The Summit League tournament title last year and competed in the NCAA tournament for the first time since the 2001 season. Western opens the 2009 season against Wright State on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 3 p.m. in the Bradley Tournament in Peoria, Ill.
