The main culprits are anxiety, depression and hostility. With each of these feelings comes an increase in the development of the IL-6 chemical, which is associated with distress and all chronic illnesses.

When a person is depressed, they are more apt to develop cancer and coronary artery disease. Harboring hostile feelings increases the risk of heart disease. Regularly experiencing anxiety puts one at a greater risk for all illnesses, as this emotion affects every system in the human body.

Positive emotions generate the opposite physical response. The feeling of love actually reduces IL-6 levels, which, in effect, increases HGH levels that help repair body response. The feeling of love actually reduces IL-6 levels, which, in effect, increases HGH levels that help repair body

tissue and heighten immunity.

Borysenko offered further justification for the mind-body connection in acknowledging the "placebo effect."

In a study looking at the consequences of chemotherapy treatment on cancer patients, 30 percent of patients who were receiving a placebo drug experienced an actual physical loss of their hair.

It is clear that maintaining a positive outlook and the ability to cope with emotion are necessary in attaining a healthy life. This, however, is easier said than done, especially for college students.

Borysenko described the distinction between the right and left hemisphere of the brain. The left is our connection to the external world while the right is our inner peace circuit. She informed the audience that it is possible for people to tap into the right hemisphere with certain practices.

"Students should take up a practice that allows them to become mindful and present, one that will reduce your stress and increase your happiness," Borysenko said. "Meditation elicits relaxation which decreases depression and anxiety obsessive thinking. Nature, music, art, yoga and golf can all have the same effect. It is about finding out what works for you. What is it that gives you inner peace?"

Her overall message is much larger than creating one less stressed-out student or even a whole college campus.

"My goal is to inspire people from all walks of life to reduce their stress and discover their spiritual nature," Borysenko said. "Every person wants to be happy and healthy. If we can begin to recognize that we are all spiritual beings, regardless of religion, we will develop more tolerance, which will result in a more peaceful world."
