Animal lovers and music enthusiasts will come together Wednesday, Nov. 19 at Adams Street Coffee from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for the McDonough County Animal Shelter supply drive.

The event is being organized as part of a required class project by professor Amy Patrick's English 383 public and persuasive writing class. For the assignment, students are expected to apply the persuasive strategies they are learning in a real-world context and present it to an actual audience.

The project's task manager is senior English major Casey Suhling, who proposed helping the animal shelter, as it is in dire need of assistance.

"The animal shelter takes in so many animals, and now they're desperately low on things like bleach for sanitizing and kitty litter," Suhling said. "I think we can all realize that we as students are contributing to this problem, and we should do something to help them out."

Suhling cites several instances when dogs were found abandoned in apartment buildings weeks after the tenant had moved out or litters of kittens found discarded in boxes.

"I think we owe it to the animal shelter to raise awareness for them," Suhling said. "And this should be a really fun way for the WIU community to help out."

The class will be having a coin war from Monday to Wednesday in Simpkins Hall. Pictures of the various pets available for adoption at the shelter will be placed on jars, and students are encouraged to put money in the jar of the dog or cat of their choice. The winner will be announced at the supply drive Wednesday evening.

"Even though all the money is going to the same place and the dogs and cats won't actually know the difference, we just thought this would be a fun way to get students to give monetary donations to the shelter," Suhling said. "The money will be used to purchase much-needed supplies for the animals."

Several local musicians will perform at Adams Street Coffee Wednesday evening, including Rob Perry.
