Don't violate Second Amendment rights

Issue date: 11/10/08 Section: Opinion
It's late at night and you hear your front door being kicked in. What do you grab for to protect your home and family? A gun, one of mankind's best tools and inventions; cold sleek steel, brass, gunpowder and lead all together has never been so important until now.
There is a belief that guns kill people and we would have less violence without them. This is about the same as saying pencils make mistakes, not the writer. As bad as it sounds in an open and free society, there will be terrorist attacks both foreign and domestic. You simply cannot control everyone, nor can there be a policeman stationed on every block.
The Insurance Information Institute (www.iii.org) reported 42,642 automobile deaths in 2006. Should a ban be put on cars and driving? Maybe the roads are to blame. Instead of punishing individuals, the blame gets put on objects. Guns do not kill these people; people do. Humans have been killing each other from the beginning of our species and will continue to do so. Only the methods have changed.
Some children and adults learn about guns from video games and movies instead of legitimate teachers or parents. These methods of media give the viewer the impression that guns are toys and that life is not precious. I'm not saying to change the entertainment, but gun education needs to be taught to everyone in some form. Not only would this help stop accidental deaths, this would allow people to appreciate and respect guns and their abilities. Also, safety devices such as locks and safes need to be used when inexperienced people and children are in the house.
If the ability to defend one's life, liberty and property were removed, there would be no way of self-defense; more deaths of law-abiding citizens would follow. Criminals will still have firearms regardless of laws, why would they not carry guns when citizens are not allowed to? A ban on guns would just empower criminals over the American citizen.
The Nine Myths of Gun Control article at www.lizmichael.com says that there are about 35,000 gun-related deaths every year in America, and 2.5 million Americans use guns to protect themselves. Guns in the wrong hands can be disastrous, but in the right hands can save lives. Most Americans are law-abiding citizens; punishing the masses for the mistakes of few will not help protect Americans.
The Second Amendment says, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." It is one of our rights to keep firearms; exercise that right.
In Illinois, one has to have a firearm owner's identification card, or FOID card. This can be printed off the Internet at the Illinois State Police Web site (isp.state.il.us).
Fill it out, include a photo of yourself in the letter and a check for $10 and in a few weeks you will receive your FOID card. You need to have a FOID card to buy ammunition and guns.
Guns do more than just provide a means of self-defense; they can be used for collecting, recreation and hunting. Guns are tools; it's up to the operator how they utilize that tool.

We all have to remember who we are and what others have givin over the years to have these rights. But...it comes at a price...do we allow automatic weapons that are designed to kill rather than protect?

Gordon, 'automatic' firearms have been heavily regulated since 1934. Even regulated, there are approx 300,000 machine guns and submachine guns legally registered in this country, yet virtually none of them are ever used in a criminal manner. (Continued…)

Great Article. One Misconception about Gun Control Advocates. They Don't Care about the Facts, in fact, They are Very Aware of the Facts about Guns. The Number One reason they want Gun Control is because of their positions in the UN, or New World Order. (Continued…)

Every despot or tyranny has first used the law under the guise of "public safety and good" to disarm the populace. It is much easier to control a herd of sheep than it is to deal with a pride of lions. (Continued…)
