Issue date: 10/17/08 Section: Sports
The Western Illinois softball team was recently named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association 2007-08 All-Academic team after earning a 3.38 grade point average this past spring, the 15th highest grade point average in the nation.
The Westerwinds return 12 of their 18 players who helped earn this distinction that include: Colleen Biebel, Julie DePolo, Kamren Ferguson, Lauren Furgala, Beth Golitko, Courtney Jacobson, Nikki Marinec, Anna Nelson, Michelle Neubauer, Lori Pankratz, Michelle Prieto and Erin Schlotfeldt.
At the end of the season, the softball team also had six players named to the Summit League's Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence. Five players that include, DePolo, Furgala, Jacobson, Pankratz and Schlotfeldt all return to this year's squad.
The Westerwinds will look to continue their success off the field as well this upcoming season, after winning the Summit League tournament title last year and competing in the NCAA tournament for the first time since the 2001 season.
