Letter to the editor
Issue date: 10/10/08 Section: Opinion
Editor's Note: The following letter is in response to "We don't need universal health care" by Adam Brown, which appeared in the October 8 issue of the WC.
Obviously this article is discussing Sen. Barack Obama's health care plan. Let me clear up a few things. Sen. Obama does not want to create universal health care. The Obama-Biden plan provides affordable, accessible health care for all Americans, builds on the existing health care system, and uses existing providers, doctors and plans to implement the plan. Under the Obama-Biden plan, patients will be able to make health care decisions with their doctors, instead of being blocked by insurance company bureaucrats. Under the plan, if you like your current health insurance, nothing changes, except your costs will go down by as much as $2,500 per year. If you do not have insurance you can choose to enroll in the new public plan, which will offer benefits similar to what every federal employee and member of Congress gets. Or you can choose private plan options through the national health exchange. Here are some bullet points of his plan:
•Invest in electronic health information technology systems
•Improve access to prevention and proven disease management programs
•Lower costs by taking on anticompetitive actions in the drug and insurance companies
•Reduce costs of catastrophic illnesses for employers and their employees.
Barack Obama's plan will have everyone go to the same doctor, or go to some government building for your yearly check-up. What his plan provides is a way to lower costs for all and to give the ability for people to buy health care at an affordable, fair rate. Barack Obama will pay for his $50 - $65 billion health care reform effort by rolling back the Bush tax cuts for Americans earning more than $250,000 per year, taking away the tax breaks for big oil companies, and retaining the estate tax at its 2009 level. Adam, do more research about Obama's plan before you write about it again. I suggest BarackObama.com or Factcheck.org; both which can give more insight about Sen. Obama's plan.
