The Leathernecks soccer team lost their home opener to Evansville 1-0 Friday.
Western (7-3-1) remained tied with Evansville (7-3-1) throughout the first half as both teams traded ball positions and saw close opportunities to score pass by.
Evansville was able to score in the second half during the 65th minute with a goal by sophomore fielder Tom Irving off two assists. Evansville forward Tyler Crawford passed the ball to teammate Mike Luttrull, who found Irving for an open shot as they raced down the field.
"I thought for the whole game we were pretty solid until we gave up the counter," said head coach Eric Johnson. "They outran us on that one play. They ran right by three guys and we didn't keep up with them."
The 'Necks could not score against Aces senior goalkeeper Alec Duffy as Western Illinois finished the game with eight shot attempts and four shots were on goal.
In the first half, the 'Necks took four shots, but were unsuccessful in scoring a goal. Junior goalkeepr Stephen Paterson was able to make two saves to keep the match tied, 0-0, going into halftime.
Freshman forward Arthur Paszkowski led the 'Necks with three shot attempts and one shot was on goal.
Both goalkeepers recorded a total of four saves in the match. The Purple Aces outshot the Leathernecks 11-8 in the match and took five corner kicks to Western's three.
"We're more concerned defensively early in the season," Johnson said. "Now it's time to put some work in the attack."
Evansville outshot the 'Necks with 11 shot attempts and five shots were on goal.
"I thought we wore them down," Johnson said. "We need to find a quicker rhythm in our passing (game). Keep the momentum moving the ball to make the other team move."
Western will play their next match at home against Eastern Illinois Oct. 8 at 4:30 p.m.
