Senior Andy Jones finished in second place in Flight C to pace the Western Illinois men's tennis team at the 4th Annual Art Peterson Invitational at the varsity courts new Brophy Hall.
"There were a few bright moments in the singles," stated Western Illinois head coach Michael Hunt. "Jim winning the G Singles flight was great and should give him a little more confidence. I thought Cisco had a nice win in the A flight, as well. Andy Jones got to the finals at the C Flight, also, so it wasn't a bad weekend overall in the singles. Doubles, though, was a little brutal."
Jones used an opening round win over Cole Garrison from SIU-Edwardsville, 6-4, 6-1, and a semifinal win over Truman State's Eric McCollough, 6-3, 6-2, to reach the championship match. Jones would drop the championship match, 6-1, 6-3.
Freshman Jim Capalbo took three victories over the field of competitors in Flight G to win the flight's championship. Capalbo only dropped eight games en route to the championship.
In doubles play, the Leathernecks received a fifth place finish from Jones and Capalbo. After losing their first round match, the duo won two straight matches, each by a score of 8-2, to claim fifth place.
"We struggled here in doubles this weekend," stated Hunt. "Neither team played particularly well, although I was proud of Andy and Jim pulling out two matches during their first times playing with each other."
Three Leathernecks compete in ITA All-American Championships
A trio of Western Illinois men's tennis players competed in the pre-qualifying rounds of the ITA All-American Championships presented by D'Novo .at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
"Overall, some mixed results for this weekend," said Western Illinois head coach Michael Hunt. "We were excited to have three guys selected to compete in the All-Americans for the first time, but disappointed with how the results turned out. Still, I hope it was a great experience for the guys and one that could help at our Regional tournament and next year in the team competitions."
Seniors Zach Frisch, Neil Lesinski and Sean Ragee-Nelson were three of 265 to compete in the premier college tournament.
Frisch was defeated by John Tragardh from LSU, 6-1, 6-4, while Lesinski was beaten from Tennesee Tech's Josh Girling, 7-6 (4), 6-1. After receiving a bye through the first round, Ragee-Nelson retired from his match due to injury.
