Gym Class Heroes: 'Quilt'
Josh Jefferson
Issue date: 9/17/08 Section: The Edge
When I think of a quilt, I think of a lot of things.
The first thing that comes to mind is that it is made up of many different pieces. Often the pieces of a quilt come from old clothes and heirlooms that have some sort of personal value attached to them.
The same is true of Gym Class Heroes' latest album, "Quilt." Every song on the disc is different from the next.
"Drnk Txt Rmeo" has a hint of reggae in it and blends in the sound that is recognizable as the Gym Class Heroes. "Blinded By the Sun" takes a classic line from an '80s song and reworks it to fit into the context of this new song.
"Cookie Jar" is the album's first single. It sounds like a lot of songs that have come out recently, but I can't fault the Heroes for following a trend, especially when they deftly use a metaphor throughout the song. Lord knows we all like our cookies.
I am also going to call it right know that "Don't Tell Me It's Over" is going to be the next hit single that everyone wants to download until servers all over the world crash.
By far, though, "Kissin' Ears" is my favorite track and if "Don't Tell Me It's Over" does not set the world on fire, this song should.
"No Place to Run" will please fans more along the indie and alternative fronts.
There is really not a single song on this CD that I did not enjoy listening to. Every song seems to connect effortlessly with the next.
For fans, this is a CD worth picking up with little reservation. For those who are new to the Gym Class Heroes, while you should pick up this album, I would also say you should get "The Papercut Chronicles" just to get a feel for the group. Either way, this is an album that you should buy.
