A Static Lullaby: 'Rattlesnake'
Josh Jefferson
Issue date: 9/17/08 Section: The Edge
This is some very angry music. You think I'm joking, but I'm definitely not joking on this front.
It reminded me very much of Drowning Pool's "Let the Bodies Hit the Floor" the entire time I was listening to this album. By no means is this a bad thing.
In fact, the next time I am working out, the entire album "Rattlesnake" by A Static Lullaby will certainly be part of the playlist.
A Static Lullaby is a band in the same music vein of such bands as Drowning Pool and maybe even System of a Down, although A Static Lullaby is not nearly as kinetic with their guitar work as System.
The opening song, "Rattlesnake!" is not a light introduction like on other albums, but is rather like getting thrown into a book in media res.
"The Pledge" is an interesting song that feels like it just missed out on something. The song "Bear Trap" lives up to its name with an unmistakably fierce quality.
If there is one major complaint I would put against A Static Lullaby, it is that they feel a bit like a one trick pony. Not a My Little Pony, mind you, but more along the lines of a very angry pony that may decide to eat your face on a whim. The trick being that all the songs start to sound very much alike after repeated listening.
It is almost as if A Static Lullaby is actively trying to lull you with their music. The blending effect is almost to the point where if played on shuffle you would forget what song you were listening to. It seems to stem mainly from the vocal work that has little variation in tone or decibel level between songs.
I do not think that there is a better way to put it other than to say that this is a group that you will want to keep in eye on, because while this album was not totally satisfying, A Static Lullaby may yet surprise us.
