According to CNN.com, more than 20,000 people failed to evacuate the Galveston, Texas area after officials warned them to do so in Hurricane Ike's wake.

This wasn't a "boy-who-cried-wolf" situation. This has happened before. This will happen again. And it's happening now. So why didn't they react to the warning?

At the WC, we feel this neglect was beyond stupid. It was downright dangerous. Twenty thousand lives were at stake. Twenty thousand people had so little respect for themselves that they could not bring themselves to leave their homes.

Truth be told, we are not sure what demographics composed the body of people. There could have been a prison or two interspersed into that mix of people, which would have been difficult to move, even with extensive notice. However, a prison alone would not have accounted for even half of the 20,000 people, which means some were still ignoring the warnings.

Understandably, there were still people who financially would have had difficulty fleeing their homes, but they still could have sought professional help for their situation. Life is one of the most delicate possessions we have as humans. Sitting idly by and hoping not to be pummeled by natural disasters will only end in tears for everyone.

It is hurricane season. If you live in hurricane alley you should probably take the proper precautions as to preserve your own life. Katrina was an unpleasant enough realization; Gustav was a reminder. Ike's presence is not shocking.

We feel sorry for those victimized by the hurricanes, but we still wonder why they had to take lives. We wonder why those residents did not do everything in their power to attempt escaping death. We wonder what the mindset of America is now.

Soon, hurricane season will be over and gulf residents will continue their lives as they did before. Hopefully, though, there will be a change in them. Hopefully, they will see the damage that has been done so many times before, and they will make a conscious effort to avoid repeating mistakes. Don't let some stupid funnel control your life.
