SGA and STU to conduct off- campus housing surveys

The move from on-campus residence halls to off-campus apartments and houses can be a handful for any student, especially when large sums of money and questionable amounts of quality are concerned.
The Student Government Association, along with the Western Illinois University Student Tenant Union, has been concocting a plan over the summer with their sights set on eliminating much of the hassle and disappointment involved with choosing a place to live off campus.
"Were going to have the students fill out surveys regarding past landlords and their properties, but we're also going to get the landlords perspectives," said SGA president Robert Dulski. "We are not targeting any one landlord in particular, but there is some motivation behind this, because some landlords have been called slumlords."
Dulski said it is SGA's goal to have the survey results published and available for students to use as a reliable tool while choosing a new residence.
It is important for students "to get the biggest bang for their buck," according to Dulski. He added the SGA's efforts are also geared toward promoting the best parts of the communities that surround Macomb.
"The reason why we're doing this is to promote a good quality of living throughout Macomb and get the word out about the places students can get the best value for their money," Dulski said.
"$3500 a year for a person to live is a big investment, and we want to do our best to help secure that investment for students."
Although the method for survey has not been decided, Dulski said it is important for the SGA to take their time and not rush the process.
"We have to look for the best survey method possible, because if you put it only on the Web or pass it out only in the union, the survey won't reach those who aren't usually on the web or in the union," Dulski said. "We want the survey results to be as diversified as possible."
Led by president Kyle Pletsch, the Student Tenant Union has also been involved with the project. According to Dulski, the two organizations should be deep in discussion within the next two weeks.
