Dear Students of Western:

Summer vacation. Wow. How was it? I hope you had a relaxing one and I am sure it was much needed (for all of your teachers also). Sleeping in all morning, laying in the sun by the pool, working for some extra "spending" cash this year, watching new acquired OF Ken Griffey Jr. and the Chicago White Sox dominate the American League, and relaxing all day long is what summer is all about, right? Well summer is over and you are now here in the beautiful city of Macomb. You are here at Western Illinois University to obtain a diploma in whichever field of study you desire. You have the world at your fingertips, and most of you do not even know it. No matter how long it takes you to get your diploma, just going to class simply does not cut it.

For every single student here on campus, I would like to inform you that your college career is at jeopardy. Yes I know that it might seem coldblooded and cowardly to scare you like this, but this is important for you to address. Even if this is your first year in college, it is vital that you attend to your college plans at once. What you do now will pave the way in what you are going to do when you graduate Western, diploma in hand. Being a graduate of this fine institution, I have talked with many people that have said, "I wish I could have been more involved in college." PLEASE DO NOT BE THAT STUDENT!

Do not fear though. There are countless organizations here on campus which are available for you to get involved with to enhance your college experience.

Just as important as it is for you to get involved, it is even more important to attend to your studies. When you have put the appropriate amount of time into your studies, free time should be used to enhance social and networking skills, and what better way to do this than to be involved with a campus organization?!?! Joining an organization opens the door to opportunities that you may have never experienced, so what is there to lose? If you like it, I am sure there is a club here for it. And if there is not, then it is a great opportunity to start one. Do you like this newspaper you are reading? There are opportunities for you to be involved with them. So what are you waiting for? These opportunities that you can take part in look great on a resume and are beneficial to yourself and your peers.
