Western Illinois University has been ranked No. 15 in the Sporting News magazine's Football Championship Subdivision Top 25 poll, and is predicted to finish fourth in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.
Three league teams are ranked in the top 10 and five are ranked overall. Northern Iowa is picked No. 3, followed by newcomer North Dakota State, No. 8, and Youngstown State, No. 9. Behind Western Illinois is Southern Illinois at No. 21. The four unranked teams, in order of predicted finish, are South Dakota State, Illinois State, Missouri State and Indiana State.
The publication lists Leatherneck Jason Williams as the conference's top defensive player and one of three linebackers from across the country on its preseason all-America team. North Dakota State running back Tyler Roehl and Colgate's Jordan Scott beat out Western Illinois' Herb Donaldson for the two preseason all-America running back spots.
The Leathernecks return 10 all-conference honorees, including six first-team selections, along with nine starters on both sides of the ball.
