Hawkinson named associate provost (6/11/08)

Two new positions - associate provost for budget, planning, and personnel, and associate provost for undergraduate and graduate studies - were recently created at Western Illinois University. The former position was filled last week by Kenneth Hawkinson, associate dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communication at Western, and the latter was filled yesterday by Judi Dallinger, assistant provost for undergraduate studies.
According to Jack Thomas, the two positions were developed in order to organize and restructure the office so they could function better than they were.
"It's sort of a new position, but it's actually a reshuffling of all the duties in the provost's office," Hawkinson said. "Some of the duties will be going into another associate provost position, such as the director of the graduate school, first year experience and assessment."
He added that budget, planning, and personnel and administration of the union contract would all be duties for the position he would hold.
Jack Thomas, provost and vice president of Academic Affairs, said "(Hawkinson) is well-qualified . . . I certainly look forward to working with him.
"(Hawkinson) has been on our campus for a number of years, so he knows the campus, he knows the people here, and he knows the town of Macomb . . . because of this, he will be an asset to this institution," he added.
Thomas added that he felt Hawkinson and Dallinger would be great additions to the department.
"(Dallinger) works more with assessment," Thomas said. "She works more with the FYE program, and anything to do with undergraduate and graduate studies.
"I'm just glad to fill these positions to get my leadership team together so that we can move forward with some of the things we want to do at this university," Thomas said. Both positions will start their duties full-time beginning Aug. 1.
