Chelsea Clinton says mother more prepared than father

1 DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - Chelsea Clinton says her mother would be a better president than her father because she is more prepared and more progressive.

Clinton told about 300 people at Duke University on Tuesday that former President Bill Clinton didn't have a complete grasp of the inner workings of Congress when he took office in 1993.

The former first daughter said her mother, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton, will benefit from her time as a New York senator.

Chelsea Clinton said her mother knows how to be productive in Washington. She stands her ground on issues but knows how to work with Republicans. And that, she said, will help her mother navigate challenges and fulfill her campaign trail promises.

Richie Sambora charged with DUI in Southern California

2 SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) -Richie Sambora was charged Tuesday with drunken driving following his arrest last month when his blood-alcohol level was nearly twice the legal limit, prosecutors said.

The Bon Jovi lead guitarist faces two misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence of alcohol and driving with a blood-alcohol level above the legal limit, the Orange County district attorney's office said.

Sambora, 48, was pulled over in Laguna Beach on March 25 after he was allegedly seen swerving and straddling two lanes. District attorney's spokeswoman Farrah Emami said Sambora's blood-alcohol level was .13 percent; the legal limit is .08 percent in California.

Gas prices rise further above $3.50, while oil nears $120

3 NEW YORK (AP) - Gas and oil prices moved further into record-high territory Tuesday, with retail gas reaching a national average of $3.51 for the first time and crude nearing $120 as the dollar fell to a new low against the euro.

At the pump, the national average price of a gallon of regular gas rose 0.8 cent Tuesday to $3.511, according to a survey of stations by AAA and the Oil Price Information Service.

Gas prices are nearly 66 cents higher than last year, when prices peaked at a then-record of $3.23 in late May, and have prompted many analysts to raise their estimates of where gas is going to go.

"I wouldn't rule out the possibility that we could get to $4," said Antoine Halff, an analyst at Newedge USA LLC.

'He raped me,' woman says of fellow Naval Academy midshipman

4 WASHINGTON (AP) - A female midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy testified Tuesday that a fellow midshipman raped her in her dorm room after he had been drinking.

Mark Calvanico is accused of rape, making a false statement to investigators, conduct unbecoming an officer and unauthorized absence.

The woman, who is in her second year at the academy, testified at an Article 32 hearing at the Washington Navy Yard. The hearing is being held to determine whether Calvanico, a third-year student, should stand trial.
