Students and faculty gathered in the Heritage Room of the Western Illinois University Union to compete in Trivia Bowl II Wednesday evening.
A total of 43 teams tested their trivia knowledge in hopes of winning the popular "Rock Band" video game.
While teams "Smash Club" and "No Leaf Clover" tied for second place, it was "Real World Macomb" that took first and landed the grand prize.
Endorsed and partly funded by the Substance Abuse and Prevention Education/Research grant, food was provided and many prizes were raffled off. Bluetooth headsets and iTunes gift cards were just a few of the incentives motivating so many students to participate.
"This year's turnout was great. We really didn't expect this many teams to sign up," said Alex Backus, host of the Trivia Bowl. "Last year, we didn't get the grant until about two weeks before the event so we only had about five teams participate, but this year we did a lot of advertising and got the grant earlier, which really helped."
Keri Osbourne, intramural graduate assistant, helped spread the word this year.
"She really did a lot to inform the sororities and fraternities. Her communication with them was really helpful," said Backus, who also gives credit to the overall promotion of the event. "We put advertisements in all of the clubs and organization mailboxes and posted signs at the Rec."
This was how senior family and consumer sciences major Todd Nelson found out about the event.
Nelson, who plays baseball for Western, saw a sign at the Spencer Student Recreation Center and convinced his roommate Peter Schneider to sign up with him. Together they formed the team "Grandma's Boyz" in hopes of winning the new game.
"I just thought it would be an easy way to win 'Rock Band.' I had no idea there would be all these people," Nelson said.
"It's been fun. We love playing Scene It and stuff, so this is cool. I would definitely do it again," Schneider added.
Senior supply chain management major Kory Schuckman, who also joined to compete with his friends, enjoyed the learning aspect.
