Most Macomb residents will find a late Christmas present on their garbage collection day this week - new trash and recycling receptacles.

In October the Macomb City Council approved a new contract with Waste Management for solid waste removal that contained a controversial clause forcing all residents to use WM containers. Some citizens felt the standard 96-gallon tote was too large, but officials said a smaller 64- or 35-gallon size is available upon request.

Originally Jan. 14 was the cut-off for cart substitution without being charged an exchange fee, but the deadline has been extended to Feb. 18 because of the large amount of requests.

People wishing to dispose of old trash cans have 30 days to write "Throw Out" on the cans and place them next to the new totes.

Questions about the new containers or requests for replacements can be directed to the City Hall business office at 309/836-8218 or the Macomb Solid Waste Hotline at 309/837-1204.
