Maybe the Bears will answer our prayers

Andrew Browning

Issue date: 12/3/07 Section: Opinion
What a season for the Chicago Bears. They made it to the Superbowl last year with a 13-3 record, and now they are 5-6 more than halfway through this season. Their playoff hopes hang in the air like a Rex Grossman pass during every game. Unfortunately, Grossman is prone to throwing interceptions, and our season has quite literally been in the hands of other teams all year long.

It seems like every game has been a must-win game, and Sunday's game against the Giants was no different. The Bears needed to keep their slim playoff hopes alive, and failed to do so with a disappointing 21-16 loss.

There are multiple games we should have won this season and did not, and there are few we won with sheer determination and grit. It is time for the Bears to do a gut check and see how important the postseason is to them.

The Bears have a solid team, but they need to play with some heart and emotion. One time I would like to see Lovie Smith actually raise an eyebrow or give a high five in celebration. He is the most subdued coach I have ever seen, and it seems to be rubbing off on the team. They act like their opponents are just going to roll over and give them the win. I don't want to hear any more about injuries, either. Every team has to deal with injuries, and you either step up to play your position or you choke. The Bears have been choking.

I am not a Grossman fan, and when he replaced Brian Griese in the game against Oakland, it was unbearable to watch the rest of the chaos. I do not think he takes the game seriously, and he does not seem very interested in winning, just playing. On the other hand, our receivers drop more balls than any other team I have watched this year, and Grossman should not be expected to shoulder all of the blame for the team.

The Bears have four games left against the Vikings, Redskins, Packers and Saints. If the Bears had played error-free football and the receivers actually caught the ball (I know I was asking a lot), they could have easily beat New York. The Bears have already beaten the Packers, and they have a better team than the Vikings, Saints and Redskins.

Grossman had very little to do with that loss. Oddly enough, they can still get in the playoffs, and the scenario doesn't have to be very weird either. (Continued…)
