Early Sunday morning a fight erupted at a house party on the 900 block of W. Calhoun Street, resulting in three individuals being stabbed. The Macomb Police Department arrested Sterling H. Watson in connection with the incident.
The case is still under investigation to determine whether or not Watson, 19, acted in self-defense.
"I'm still trying to figure out what happened," said Matt Gass, Macomb Police Detective. "This is a serious situation we're dealing with, and it's going to take time."
Watson, who is a Western Illinois University student, is being charged with aggravated battery, aggravated use of a weapon and reckless conduct. Bail was set at $30,000 and Watson was released on bond Monday morning.
At 4:09 a.m. Sunday, Office of Public Safety officers were called to Calhoun Street to assist the MPD in response to a report of a fight and stabbing. Upon arrival, MPD discovered Lafayette Robinson lying in the yard at 923 W. Carroll St. According to Gass, Robinson said he had been stabbed in the back and Western students DeMarcus Jones and Devon Askew-Mims were stabbed in the leg.
Watson allegedly pulled out a knife and began swinging it. He struck the three victims after a fight broke out at the house party.
Gass said police tracked down Watson several blocks away. He was chased by some party guests, and when police found him, he had a bloody face and swollen eye.
"We are still trying to figure out the timeline," Gass said. "There are still a lot of people to talk to."
Gass said alcohol was being consumed at the party, which could have contributed to the acts of violence. Watson and at least two of the three victims are all underage. Safety, however, is Gass' biggest concern.
"We are concerned about the safety of witnesses," Gass said. "We want to make sure students know this was a random, isolated incident."
Watson was unable to comment because the incident is still under investigation. Gass said he expects to have more information after Thanksgiving Break.
