Provost candidate Steve O. Michael recently withdrew his name from the selection pool.
Michael, who is currently university vice provost at Kent State University, said there was a scheduling conflict that prevented his ability to meet with the Provost Search Committee.
"We had a time conflict. I understand the search committee wanted to bring everyone to campus as quickly as possible," Michael said. "I picked a time, and it wasn't good for the president."
He added this fall has been very busy for him and this December he will be traveling to Russia.
"I want to thank Dr. Steven Rock and the other search committee members," Michael said. "I had nothing but positive connections with Dr. Steven Rock."
Only two candidates remain for the search committee to meet with: Dr. Kent Neely, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, and Dr. Jackie Thomas, who serves as senior vice provost for academic affairs at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
Neely has been on campus since Sunday and will remain through Friday, and Thomas is to arrive Wednesday. The new provost will take office in January.
