SGA President Sam Pfister has plans to control vandalism come second semester.

The Student Government Association met for a short time Tuesday night to discuss future plans that will pick up after Thanksgiving Break.

The ongoing problem of vandalism will meet its match in the near future, according to SGA President Sam Pfister. An idea for a "week of action" to raise community awareness about vandalism will be discussed and polished Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Student Organization Center, located in the Western Illinois University Union.

"We are not only looking to raise money through things like raffles," Pfister said. "We are looking to run programs to raise awareness."

Wednesday's meeting will also feature discussions about supplying further aid to Barbara Martin and a plan to gain sponsorship from other sources outside of SGA.

"We are definitely looking to reach out to different organizations for their help in this matter," Pfister said.

Other plans that will go into effect in the second semester include an SGA meeting that will be held at the Macomb City Hall. According to Robert Dulski, SGA speaker of the house, the success of last week's meeting at Thompson Hall inspired SGA to hold meetings in various locations.

"I thought the meeting at Thompson Hall went very well because there was a higher energy in the room," Dulski said. "We need to show the residents of Macomb what the students are doing to make a difference in the community."

In other business, Jack Nieukirk, representative of the Sigma Chi fraternity, informed SGA members of the Sigma Chi Date Auction and Raffle that will be held at the Sandburg Theater at 6 p.m. Thursday. Tickets will be sold in the Union Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The winners of the raffle will have the opportunity to go on a date with one of the 30 Sigma Chi members participating. There will be a drawing in three categories: single's date, group date and mystery date.

Week of Action?

I seriously question the statement that "vandalism will meet its match in the near future." Vandalism at WIU is a serious problem, and is worth the attention of our student leaders. (Continued…)

Yeah, right. I haven't seen CUPP do a whole hell of a lot except it's once a year big get together fair. Other than that, I never hear anything about them and I certainly haven't seen them out volunteering to patrol the neighborhoods or anything useful that might help curb the problem. (Continued…)

I'm going to echo the editorial and say that I'm sick of reading stories about vandalism and stabbings at Western. Someone unfamilar with WIU but reading these stories might wonder if the entire student body were crazed vandals looting the town and attempting murder on their fellow students. (Continued…)
