Leathernecks and Westerwinds? The controversial question regarding the unification of Western Illinois University school logos was the hot topic at Tuesday night's Student Government Association meeting.

A recent poll located on the Western Web site posed the question on whether or not the names should be unified, eliminating the Westerwind designation. The opinions among members of SGA were definitely mixed

"I think the name Leathernecks is something that is extremely marketable, and stands out from other universities in the United States," said SGA President Sam Pfister.

Although some members said they believed the name unification would be beneficial to Western's image as a university, others used the value of school history as a means of battling against the change.

"Our team wants to keep the name Westerwinds because we've been called that name for 30 years and we are very passionate about it," said Bess Rapp, director of SGA public relations and captain of the women's soccer team. "When I leave here, I will always consider myself a Westerwind."

The decision to unify the school mascots rests solely with President Al Goldfarb. He is expected to make a decision by the end of November.

In other business, Kyle Davis, representative for the Student Athletic Advisory Committee, was added as a new member of the SGA Senate. Davis will represent all student athletes in future meetings.

"I know that in the past athletes haven't had much of a say on what goes on around campus, so I'm very glad to be a part of this organization," Davis said.

SGA also discussed the possibility of alternating locations for future SGA meetings to promote more student involvement.

"This idea is a way for us to go to the students instead of making them come to us," Pfister said.
