SGA President Sam Pfister was elected last spring to his current position.

Welcome back to Western Illinois University, everyone. I hope all of you had a great summer and are now ready to get back to or begin your journey of living the life here at Western. This has been a summer for the record books: Bonds broke Hank Aaron's home run record, the Dow Jones surpassed 14,000 points and there is a black man and a woman running for president of the United States.

This is an exciting year for Western as it celebrates its golden anniversary as an official university. The new student bleachers at Hanson Field are nearing completion; the Spencer Student Recreation Center expansion has broken ground and is making fast progress; Casa Latina's old home has been razed and is in the process of being replaced with a state-of-the-art building.

Also, there will be a mock presidential election this fall that will captivate even the most apathetic.

Student Government Association is also off to a great start this year. We have been working vigorously over the summer to hold true with our word of reaching out to the student body. In keeping with that, Joe Lanane, vice president of SGA, has completely remade the Student Government Web site. The Web site, www.WesternSGA.com, is not only about SGA, but also about students. The Web site is very versatile - giving students all the information they want to know: what's going on around campus and Macomb, how to contact student representatives, a blog feature to discuss with SGA members and other students about important topics and much, much more. This revolutionary mode of governance is an effort to get SGA out of the Union on Tuesdays and into every residence hall, apartment and Greek house. Be sure to check it out: www.WesternSGA.com.

Also, compounding upon Joe's efforts, I, the president of SGA, have set up a retreat at Horn Field Campus. At this retreat SGA will become a team, create and set goals, converse about how and when we are going to complete them, discuss the future of SGA and, in the process, get rid of petty politics that have bogged us down for so long.

SGA is not here to put itself on a pedestal. It is said that Washington, D.C., is for people who are too ugly to make it in Hollywood. Well, this isn't D.C., and this isn't Hollywood; this is WESTERN, and we will act accordingly.

Go to class. Stay safe. Have a great semester. Visit our Web site.

Sam Pfister

President, Student Government Association

For those people who like purple and yellow, westernsga.com is probably a pretty website. Other than that it has very little going for it and has serious problems - with possible ligative consequences. (Continued…)
