Weekend bags players now have the chance to compete for a reason other than just for fun - prizes and a good cause.
Saturday, April 21, the Western Illinois University Marketing Club will be holding a bags tournament as a fundraiser for the local Big Brothers Big Sisters. The event begins at 11:30 a.m. in Chandler Park.
Top prizes include $100 in cash and a $50 gift certificate to Magnolia's, but prizes from Family Video and Chick's will also be awarded. In addition, there will be a raffle for a bag board.
A Pepsi truck will also be at the event selling hot dogs, chips and soda.
Registration for a two-player team costs $10 before the event and $15 dollars at the event. There is no age requirement for sign-up. The sign-up date before the event is Tuesday, April 17 from 12 to 2 p.m. in the University Union. Registration will also be available the day of the tournament. The group hopes to attract nearly 100 teams for a total of 200 people.
"Being that it's Dad's Weekend, this would be a great activity to do with your dad," said Jamie Steiner, fundraiser chair of the Marketing Club.
Because the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization operates solely on contributions from the local community, the Marketing Club hopes to make the tournament a twice-yearly event.
"This is a great cause," said Dr. Craig Conrad, Marketing Club adviser. "It's nice that students can work with the community."
