UUB works hard to please

More than 1,000 people gathered in the University Union Grand Ballroom Wednesday night in order to see popular comedian Zach Galifianakis. What does this mean?

The University Union Board has stepped up and started to book artists and comedians that students truly want to see - and the WC would like to give a round of applause for that. We understand in order to bring these big name artists and comedians, the UUB has to fork out more money; perhaps the organization should request a larger budget every year in order to give us better entertainment.

Students want artists and comedians they are either proud to see themselves or proud to tell others came to our campus. Although the student body appreciates the smaller-name artists the UUB reels in, every student technically pays for a part of the bill for these artists and comedians to come to our campus.

If the majority of students are not interested in seeing the person, we are wasting money - and we all know how valuable money is to a college student.

Not only will students be happier if this trend catches on, but there might also be a bonus for the UUB. When bigger artists are booked at Western, students tell their friends and family. If their friends and family are interested, they will most likely come to the show.

Result: more money for the UUB.

Students want to see more comedians like Galifianakis and Aries Spears and more artists like Yellowcard and Guster. This year has been fabulous for the UUB, and now that we have seen who Western can get, the expectations for next year are going to be high.

Not only has the UUB stepped up when booking artists and comedians, but it also seems this year the group is really trying to keep students entertained and provide an alternative to drinking alcohol as an activity. This effort can be seen in the recent addition of expensive prizes in UUB Bingo among other activities.

The WC would like to thank the UUB members for all their hard work and congratulate them on a great year of providing entertainment to the Western campus. May you be just as successful next year in attracting big names to our campus.

As an alum, I want to say "good job" to the UUB. In my years at Western, I think the biggest name show we had was probably Adam Sandler. That was one time in five years. (Continued…)

On behalf of the UUB, thanks for the praise, WC! We are working hard to bring what the students want to campus; and yes, most of the time, money is a large constraint on what is brought. (Continued…)
