From April 2 to 5, we at the WC would like to encourage students to log on to STARS and vote for next year's representatives of the Student Government Association. There has been a lack of student participation with past elections, as we have recognized a few times. Let's not let this happen with SGA elections.
SGA's mission statement is to promote the general welfare of students through the representation of their concerns, viewpoints and interests regarding governance issues to the administration and faculty of our distinguished university. Translation: SGA is supposed to take our concerns and issues and try to find solutions to our complaints about Western. One big issue SGA has dealt with this year is where student activity fees are being allocated and how much of students' money should go to each area.
The candidates include: for President and Vice President, Annette Glotfelty, Kyle Pletsch and Sam Pfister and Joe Lanane; for Senator, Cassandra Brimmer, Tony Thomas, Tabitha Wiggins, Eric Bogan, Maurina Patton and Nicole Shipman; for Board of Trustees, Martin Cox (QC), Jessie Kallman, Jake Schneider and Laura Rychalsky.
Because SGA is a big part of how student issues are resolved at Western, do yourself and every other student a favor and be active during this election. Try to make it to the candidate debate going on tonight at 7:30 p.m. in Stipes 121. If you cannot make it, check for candidate Facebook groups and keep your eyes open for other publicity these candidates are offering. But most importantly, take 10 to 15 minutes anytime from April 3 to 6 to vote. You do not even have to leave the comfort of your home. Just get online, log onto STARS and vote. Remember: the candidates elected in the SGA election will affect the next year at Western.
