As a public institution, Western Illinois University supports the free and open expression of ideas. In May of 2003, President Goldfarb announced that the university would enhance its 1995 free speech area policy, which limited the location for the expression of ideas. It is understood that the expression of ideas can sometimes contain strong language and graphic messages that may be offensive to some members of the campus community. These messages may include negative statements and images about personal choices and individual identities that can be hurtful and disrespectful.
As warmer weather approaches, The Anti-Harassment Education Committee wants to remind the campus that individuals who promote these messages are not invited by the university, and their right of free expression is balanced with their responsibility to conduct themselves in a civil manner. Anyone who is individually confronted or targeted, without provocation, should contact the Affirmative Action Office at 309-298-1977, or the Office of Public Safety at 309-298-1949. Additional resources can be provided by the University Counseling Center, 309-298-2453.
