Let the debate begin. Wednesday, the Student Government Association will host an open debate for all students running for executive positions in its organization.

The debate will take place from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in Stipes Room 121. This event is open to the entire student body. Participation by students is encouraged, since all questions during the debate will be asked by students in attendance.

The voting for the SGA election begins on April 2 at 6 a.m. and runs until April 5 at 5 p.m. Voting this year will once again be done on Tele-STARS or STARS on the Web. A listing and small write-up of each candidate for president-vice president, the student representative to the Board of Trustees and senators-at-large is located on pages 3 and 5 in this issue of the WC.

In other news from Tuesday night's SGA meeting:

• President Bridget Early introduced a resolution that would require students who work for the university or receive financial aid to be enrolled in a direct-deposit program. The resolution generated considerable debate and was tabled until next week's meeting when more information could be made available.

• Amethyst Week, a week dedicated to responsible drinking and the safe consumption of alcohol, will take place April 16 to 20.

Events will be held on campus all week, starting with a presentation on safe drinking Monday night. Tuesday night will feature the "Dive-In" movie in the Spencer Student Recreation Center Pool. The week will also feature a "baggo" tournament and drunk-goggle bowling. A DUI simulation will take place Friday at 10 a.m. in Q-lot. All events for the week are free.

• Two $500 scholarships are available to full-time undergraduate students in good academic and judicial standing. Applications are in the Office of Student Activities and are due back to the OSA office by April 19 at noon.

• A resolution was passed to endorse the College Textbook Affordability Act proposed by Senator Dick Durbin. The resolution, composed by senator-at-large Jessie Kallman, allows for SGA to compose a letter of support for the C.T.A.A. to be sent to United States Senators and Representatives of Illinois.
