Movie Review: "The Number 23"

Issue date: 3/23/07 Section: The Edge
If you like graphic novel-type violence (think Robert Rodriguez/Frank Miller), don't pass up this movie.

I'll tell you why people criticized this film: the same reason some people hate "Donnie Darko."

I'm positive that with one simple change to the ending critics would be commending the film for its originality. I hate it when pop culture spoon-feeds a story to its audience. Maybe the plot doesn't do what you want instinctively. Boo-hoo. We're not babies anymore, so stop expecting movies to give you a clear-cut answer.

Finally, I have to point out that Detective Fingerling plays the saxophone. As a saxophone major here at Western, I am thrilled that Carrey did not play or pretend to play the saxophone dangling from his neck as he paced obsessively in his dirty hotel room. It looked awkward and would've gotten worse had he put it in his mouth. I know most of you won't care, but I'd like to say: good director.

Want to hear something creepy? The number 23 is everywhere. When I write reviews for The Courier, I write my name, the film and a grade at the top. The figures from "Sara Gregory" + "'The Number 23'" + "A" = 23. Spooky.
