After completing recent student surveys, the Leslie F. Malpass Library will begin construction on what most students said they wanted - an in-house coffee bar. The library does not stop there, either; students are invited to name the bar themselves.
This new coffee bar will be located on the first floor of the Malpass Library, which is the story below the entrance level.
According to Noelle Ebert, senior English major and assistant librarian, construction is set to begin during Spring Break so it will not interfere with students trying to work on homework.
Ashley Bates, junior English education major, also works at the circulation desk at the library.
"It would be nice not to have to leave the library to get coffee, especially on a break," Bates said. "When you need that morning fix of coffee, it (will be) great just to go downstairs and get a coffee to wake me up when I'm studying."
"I think it's a great idea because it would help people stay awake while they are studying, and it sure beats walking to the Union for a cup of coffee," said Kellie O'Brien, junior economics major and frequent library visitor.
Other student workers at the library, however, see the coffee bar as a nuisance and unnecessary.
"Personally I think it is stupid to have a coffee bar in the library when there's a real one in the Union," Ebert said. "It is a big pain in the ass and a waste of time and money. It is going to cause more bad than good."
Some students, such as Kristin Pauley, junior music education major, said they would actually go to the library to study more.
"I would probably study more in the library if there was a coffee bar there, and it would make the atmosphere much more relaxed," she said.
Students can log onto the library's Web site and submit a name as many times as they want; the winner of the contest gets a $10 gift card and the first cup of coffee at the new coffee bar.

Ha! Back in my day (80-84) I would sit old "International tea room" on the second floor every night. Of course they only served tea there during the day - around 3 pm. (Continued…)
