PETA: an animal's worst nightmare and enemy

Wes Heinkel

Issue date: 2/7/07 Section: Opinion
During a four-week period in 2005, 100 dead dogs were found in a trash receptacle behind a supermarket in Ahoskie, N.C.

According to the Associated Press, police forces decided to stake-out the area and eventually saw two people, Andrew B. Cook and Adria Joy, step out of a van and start heaving heavy plastic bags into the dumpster.

After detaining the suspects, the officers found an additional 18 dead dogs in the dumpster and 13 still left in the van, which was registered to the headquarters of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

The two suspects have been on trial for two weeks, facing 21 counts of animal cruelty and a felony that will give them jail time. This is a perfect opportunity to shed some light on our animal-loving friends at PETA. Prepare yourself - you are about to enter a freak show.

Let's start at the apex: Ingrid Newkirk is the PETA president. Her most famous statement reads like this: "Six million Jews died in concentration camps, but six billion broiler chickens will die this year in slaughterhouses." Apparently, there is no moral difference between poultry farms and Nazi death camps. In 2003, she pleaded with Yasser Arafat to make certain "no animals are harmed in Palestinian suicide-bombing attacks." How does one become so removed from reality? Newkirk believes in "total animal liberation," which means no pets, zoos, meat, milk, wool, leather, hunting, fishing, rodeos, aquariums, circuses or even seeing-eye dogs, and she pursues her endeavors by any means necessary - the AP reports she's already been arrested 20 times.

According to The Center for Consumer Freedom, a non-profit think tank that essentially follows the money trail, the "People for the Eradication of Tons of Animals" killed 86.3 percent of the animals in its care in 2004. The next year PETA put to death a staggering 90 percent of all animals collected from the public. I'm not sure what the definition of playing God is, but the group is writing it in stone with its actions. It's probably because PETA is lacking in revenue. Oh, wait; PETA receives $29 million a year in tax-exempt funds according to www.associatedcontent.com.

America has a serious pet overpopulation problem. Irresponsible people are abandoning their cats and dogs. They aren't getting their animals spayed or neutered. (Continued…)

I hate to break this to you, but the "trial now underway" referenced in this February 7 article ended on February 2, and the defendants were found not guilty of all charges except littering. (Continued…)

This author was so inaccurate from the very beginning, that I could not even force myself to read past the second paragraph. He sounds crazy.

This article is unbelievably disingenuous. It fails to mention that the PETA workers were acquitted of the animal cruelty charges last week. They were convicted of littering (a misdemeanor). (Continued…)

The Center for Consumer Freedom is a front group for alcohol, tabacco, ranching and other interests. They were started with $600,000 in funding from Philip Morris in order to discredit those who criticize the tobacco industry. (Continued…)

I don't understand why people are so threatened by all the good that Peta tries to do. I guess they don't want to be brought out of denial about the fact that there is a disconnect between considering yourself an animal lover because you love cats and dogs, and then turning around and eating other animals that have terrible lives before they are slaughtered in the most inhumane ways possible. (Continued…)

This article is not only mean-spirited and offensive, it's also illogical. The author is against euthanizing unwanted animals, then urges his "fellow animal-eaters to sit down and enjoy a nice, juicy steak, some baby-back ribs or whatever you prefer. (Continued…)

Good job Mr. Heinkel,
The seven previous posters still believe Dorothy and ToTo actually did go to OZ and dance down the yellow brick road. I have followed PETA for more years than most of you have probably been alive. (Continued…)

Extremely misinformed and malicious article, Mr. Heinkel. You should retract this piece of biased garbage and offer an apology to your readers for purposefully misinforming them. (Continued…)

I notice that nor one of the respondents addressed the issue of PETA killing 90% of the animals they take from people, nor of the fact they were caught dumping animals in a dumpster behind a supermarket. (Continued…)
