Editor's note: The following letter is in response to "Hose comments insensitive" by Taryn Bradley, which appeared in the Feb. 2 issue of the WC.

The comments that the mayor made were in no way connected to the civil rights movement. To even suggest that his comments were racist in any way just shows the lengths that some will go to for attention.

The use of fire hoses to break up riots has been around for a long time. This idea has been implemented in many situations that had nothing to do with the civil rights movement. Many other countries use fire hoses to control crowds because of the fact that it is non-lethal and highly effective.

Now, seeing as it has been rather cold around here, spraying people with water would probably not be the smartest move. But it is easy for any educated person to see that the mayor was not entirely serious when he made that comment. The problem here is that a single, harmless comment was turned into words of hate because someone decided to make and absurd connection between fire hoses and the civil rights movement.

Why must people look for a reason to turn everything into a race problem? Why does it matter that Lovie Smith is the first African-American coach to go to the Super Bowl? He is one hell of a coach that worked very hard to get where he is at, his achievements should not be shadowed by his color.

The people that were involved in the civil rights movement were fighting for "equality". They achieved more than they ever thought was possible. Our generation was born into a world where that fight had already been fought. Why must you take everything that those people fought for and throw it out the window by searching for inequality where it doesn't exist?

To sum this article up I am going to say that you should have taken a second to think before you made such and absurd connection. Maybe you should also stop taking lines from "Remember the Titans" to back up your argument and while you are thinking, take a science course and learn that for every action there is an equal but opposite reaction.
