Just forget about Foley

Issue date: 10/9/06 Section: Opinion
Horrible civil rights violations continue throughout Africa. Congress has not addressed these at all.
The scientific community agrees that if we do not address global warming very soon, we can expect catastrophic changes in our environment.
And Congress is concerned about a sex scandal. At least the last time Congress was overly concerned with a sex scandal during the Monica Lewinsky incident, a scandal involving a war instigated by the U.S. that killed hundreds of thousands of civilians wasn't an issue. Now we have to wonder why the sex scandal is so much more important.
For the sake of the country and the world, Congress and the media ought to stop talking about the Foley sex scandal. Democrats are included. At a time in our history when the government is so corrupt as to send us to war for reasons we still haven't figured out, Congress has more important issues to discuss.
Hopefully voters can understand the lesson here as well. As frightening as it may be to consider the possibility of a Republican Congress again in 2006, the catalyst that stops voters from electing Republicans should not be this scandal. Shouldn't the war, the disorganization and the blatant refusal to compromise be enough to take away the party's majority?
Even the Democrats don't seem to think so. They are just as much at fault in this case as the Republicans. This November, unless you are sure your candidate will not focus on partisan politics, do this country a favor and vote independent. It may be the only way to put the issues in perspective.

Marianne Bossert obviously does not remember the Downing Street Memo, which detailed a meeting not involving Bush.
