A debate between Illinois' 17th Congressional District candidates Republican Andrea Zinga and Democrat Phil Hare is scheduled for Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. in Morgan Hall Room 109 on the Western Illinois University campus. The debate is open free to the public.

Western's Associated Students of Political Science organization is hosting the debate for the open U.S. Congressional seat to replace retiring Democratic Rep. Lane Evans, which "will be one of the hottest Congressional races in the nation," according to Rick Hardy, chair of Western's political science department.

Hardy, a presidential elector in the Electoral College as well as consultant and political analyst for major media organizations, will moderate the debate.

A question-and-answer format will be followed, with three panelists asking questions. Panelists include Janna Deitz, assistant political science professor at Western, whose questions will include those posed by students in freshman-level political science classes; media representative Patrick Stout, a Macomb Journal correspondent; and junior political science major Sam Lozier, representing the Associated Students of Political Science.

Each candidate will have four minutes for an opening statement, with order determined by a coin toss. Candidates will have three minutes to respond to a direct question from a panelist, and the opponent will have a two-minute response. The initial respondent will then have one minute to make a final comment. The question-and-answer session will last 60 minutes, followed by each candidate's four-minute closing statement.

For more information, contact Keith Boeckelman, associate professor and ASPS advisor, at 309/298-1261, or Hardy at 309/298-1055.
