Aside from the housing issue finally drawing to a close, Tuesday's Macomb City Council Meeting outlined some new businesses in Macomb.

Two new restaurants in Macomb have requested liquor licenses. Timothy and Kristy Kupka, owners of a fine dining restaurant, Ultra Bash Dining, requested a Class R license.

The owners of Salsarita's, 1315 E. Jackson, also requested a Class R plus SS license.

Mayor Mick Wisslead, who also serves as the city's Liquor Commissioner, said both licenses would most likely be granted though actual voting is still weeks away.

The council also agreed to engage in a tree replacement program with Ameren CIPS. Under the program, trees that have been taken down because of power lines will be replaced in more compatible areas. City Administrator Michael Hays voiced his support for the program, urging the council to accept and move "forward with the program."

Parking changes near campus were discussed as well. The council wishes to change the parking hours on Carroll Street to allow GoWest buses to safely pick up and drop off passengers on weekends. The proposed no parking hours for the street would be from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. Thursday night through Sunday morning.

"We have, in the past year, made this (Carroll Street) no parking, and it's worked well so far," Wisslead said.

Macomb will also be getting two new wards, increasing the number from five to seven. The motion was passed unanimously after aldermen waived a second reading and moved to adopt the item.

During the committee reports, Second Ward Alderman Ken Zahnle and Fourth Ward Alderman John Maguire voiced their concerns with other occupancy issues throughout the city.

In 2002, the number of unrelated persons allowed to live in a single family dwelling was set at two. According to City Planner Bob Marht, a number of housing units are not in compliance.

"We're looking at the possibility ... of bringing those R-1 and R-2 units into compliance," he said.

In other news, Wisslead announced Oct. 31 as the tentative date for the second Amtrak train to begin service in Macomb.

"It looks like Oct. 31 is (the date for) our new train set. Stay tuned for that one," the mayor said with a smile.

The next City Council meeting is Sept. 18.
