Every year moms from all over come to Macomb to spend time with their children for one special weekend. Western Illinois University offers a Moms' Weekend every second weekend in September in order to help first-year students adjust to campus life.

"It helps with homesickness and makes the adjustment to life on campus easier," said Karolynn Heuer, Student Activities and Parent Assistance Center director.

Registration for this event is from noon to 6 p.m. on Friday in the Conference Lobby on the first floor of the University Union.

All information about each event and the wristbands for prepaid events can be picked up at the registration table.

The opening dinner reception coincides with the annual Macomb Balloon Rally, which is the main event of Moms' Weekend. Plenty of outdoor entertainment will be provided for the rally by Western and the Macomb community.

Macomb offers a Park 'N Cruise on the Square Friday night where owners bring their vintange cars to show off.

Saturday morning starts off with a 5K run. Saturday afternoon there are plenty of activities to keep moms and students occupied such as a jewelry and craft show, bags challenge and the Union billiards room and bowling alley.

Another event will be the golf scramble on the Harry Mussato golf course. Capping off Saturday night will be live entertainment on Vince Grady Field featuring the Daddy-O's from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

As the weekend draws to a close on Sunday, a farewell breakfast will wrap up Moms' Weekend.

Moms' Weekend is multifaceted to help with the rising number of divorced and widowed families. There is also a Dads' Weekend and a Family Weekend so students don't feel obligated to favor one parent.

Many students are excited for this event. Ashley Bates, a junior English education major, said the event that she and her mother are looking forward to most is the balloon rally.

As of last Thursday, 460 moms signed up for the event. Although registration is not required, mothers are still encouraged to do so.
