SGA President Bridget Early brought an appointment of José Marroguin to the Senate for the position of comptroller. Due to Marroguin's excellent fiscal knowledge and pledged commitment, Early said she felt he could accurately do the job.
Discussion by the Senate began as senators questioned Marroguin's commitment due to past experiences. Marroguin tried to reassure the Senate by saying, "I have extensive experience with financial matters and have gained experience from being a voting and active member of SGA."
Jessie Kallman, senator at large, questioned Marroguin as tensions in the room began to rise. She said she was not convinced because he dropped out of his commitment to be a chair of another committee.
Marroguin said that was as a cabinet member, which is different than a senator or senator at large.
"There is more structure and someone to respond and answer to … I have no doubt in my mind that I won't go above and beyond the tasks assigned," he said.
Early also encouraged members to focus on giving Marroguin a second chance despite the past.
"I did not stay a second term to see that things would not get done," Early said.
She added she is serious about her stance, threatening to take the proper procedures in the event a cabinet member does not fulfill his or her position.
"I (apparently) need to delegate and with (Marroguin) in this position, I won't have to worry about so much and can delegate to him," Early said.
SGA Vice President Sam Pfister also tried to encourage members by reminding them of the weekly meeting they must have with the vice president and the goals that they are required to set for themselves. Despite the questioning of Marroguin's commitment and professionalism, he was appointed as comptroller.
Along with the appointment of Marroquin, Tara Short, sophomore political science major, was appointed as Attorney General. Early said she believes her enthusiasm and new ideas will bring something new to SGA and therefore the student body.
