Baggo, dog walking and pickup games of football are all signs of spring and can be seen around Western Illinois University's campus as of late. With the spring weather slowly rolling in, students are coming out of the woodwork to enjoy the fresh air.

Two Western students driving on West University Drive near the East Q-lot entrance collided, bringing a halt to this peaceful scene.

Sounds of sirens resonated throughout the campus area when Jarod Clayberg, junior general orientation major, and Kristan Salter, junior law enforcement and justice administration major, collided at approximately 2:50 p.m. Wednesday.

According to a Macomb Police Department traffic crash report, Clayberg, driving a gold 1996 Chrysler, turned across the eastbound lanes of traffic in the direction of the east Q-lot parking lot entrance when Salter, driving a red and silver 2001 Honda TVT1000R sport bike, struck Clayberg's passenger side door. Clayberg said he never saw Salter before the collision and only heard the sport bike hit his car.

Thomas Setina, freshman general orientation major, said he was leaving Brophy Hall after class when the accident happened.

"I was just walking down the block on the other side of the street. I see this motorcycle. I'm pretty sure he was trying to slow down … I saw it happen. The guy just flew off the bike," Setina said.

He added he and the many other students leaving class all tried to call the cops to alert them of the accident.

When police arrived at the scene of the accident, Salter was found unconscious, still breathing but suffering from head injuries.

Although not present at the time of the accident, Andrew Arnold, sophomore construction management major at Spoon River College, said he was driving his motorcycle when he saw the traffic jam.

"I was going to meet with one of our fraternity brothers and I was right at the stop sign in front of the wreck and they (OPS) directed us into Q-lot."

Arnold added, "I actually saw them putting him on the stretcher … Me being another rider, I freaked out. I've had really close calls myself and I've only rode for a year.
