System of a Down
"Mezmerize/Hypnotize"
Grade: A-

System of a Down released its fifth studio album, "Hypnotize," on Nov. 22. The Armenian foursome consists of Serj Tankian (vocals/keyboards), Daron Malakian (guitar/vocals), Shavo Odadjian (bass) and John Dolmayan (drums). The record comes as part two of the "Mezmerize/Hypnotize" double album. "Mezmerize," which hit stores in May, unleashed two singles, "B.Y.O.B. (Bring Your Own Bombs)" and "Question!," both receiving widespread radio play.

"Hypnotize," the title track and first single from the new CD, is another instant hit that is helping to create an even bigger fan base. The band seems to be writing songs with the intent of gaining new supporters. Many of the tracks on this double album are softer than their listeners may expect from this band. Malakian also sings more on this release than previous albums. He even sings the lead on a couple of songs. However, Hypnotize still features many aggressive songs reminiscent of its older records.

"Vicinity of Obscenity" is a very unique song. As a mixture of metal, polka and funk, this song displays System of a Down's versatility and also different musical tastes. It will probably never make it to a radio playlist, but it's one of the most entertaining tracks on the CD.

This album goes great with "Mezmerize" because they were written and recorded at the same time. The lyrics and music coincide very well. One interesting feature of this double album is the packaging. Both albums have similar artwork from Vartan Malakian, Daron's father and physically join together to make one double disc package.

"Hypnotize" is available in CD and DualDisc formats. The DVD side of the DualDisc edition features the entire album in Enhanced Stereo sound, the music videos for the two "Mezmerize" singles and exclusive behind-the-scenes footage showing the production of the two discs.

These two records are easier on the ears than previous ones, as they sometimes show a softer side of the band, yet do so without losing that distinctive aggression that made the band what it is.

The Ike Reilly Assassination
"Junkie Faithful"
Grade: A

Once upon a time, there was a rowdy, yet laid-back folk singer named Ike Reilly who really loved his Crown Vic and an occasional Heineken. Wait a minute. He still does.

Libertyville native Reilly and his band The Assassination released their third studio effort "Junkie Faithful" this September and has launched a new 2005 tour.

"Junkie Faithful" has several interesting tracks that make it a unique, yet, defining album. This is probably his "slowest" album, but it is surely one of the most lyrical. "The Mixture" almost sounds like Wilco with Reilly's ballad-like sound and feel.

The lyrically Bob Dylan-sounding "God and Money" definitely brings listeners to Reilly's roots - there's always a clear, defining message. On "Kara Dean," he pays homage to the woman who's brave enough to love and stand by him, despite his lifestyle.

One highlight, "Farm Girl," is a bluesy ditty with a fictional character who is either about a hardworking man or a man who takes pleasure in doing the deed with farm girls - on, off and throughout the farm.

After releasing "Sparkle in the Finish" last year, Reilly has definitely grown in popularity. With "Junkie Faithful," Reilly's popularity has continued to grow while listeners have sung and sometimes drank along to songs that represent some of the best times.

Since his first album "Salesmen & Racists" in 2001 referred to everything from sex to social commentary on other countries, and yes, his love of driving his Crown Vic, Reilly has definitely found a name and several places for himself.

Whether referring to money, love or shame, The Ike Reilly Assassination is definitely one of the best bands you've never heard. Go out there, get a copy, play it at a party, drink to the host and have a great time.
