Today marks the beginning of Western Illinois University's Family Weekend. For some, this will be their only rendezvous with their family since departing on move-in day.
"It is the first time I have seen my boyfriend in two and a half months and he's flying all the way from Las Vegas," said Nicole Humbert, freshman political science major.
For others, this will mean parking in Q-lot will become even more difficult.
With over 20 scheduled events for the next three days, the question may not be 'What to do?' but 'What to attend?'
The theme of this year's family weekend is "The Taste of Western" and will feature various events and activities coordinating with that theme.
Tonight, students and their families who are craving the arts can attend the University Art Gallery's recently opened exhibit from its Permanent Collection: Art of the New Deal. In Horrabin Theatre, "Blithe Spirit" will be performed at 7:30 p.m. with an after show discussion. Western Symphonic Wind Ensemble also will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the College of Fine Arts and Communication recital hall.
Saturday - weather permitting -will bring far more athletic options to campus visitors. At 8 a.m., a two-person nine-hole golf scramble and at 8:30 a.m., a 5K poker run. The fanciful King and Queen challenge begins at 2 p.m. This is a chance to watch your parents perform a collection of comical challenges; the winners will be recognized on the field during the football game against Western Kentucky University.
Other activities this weekend include the annual Presidential Dinner featuring a magician, various children's activities for younger siblings, a craft show and an outdoor showing of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" in N-lot.
Another feature occurring this weekend is the annual tuition raffle sponsored by the Student Alumni Council. Students and their parents can buy raffle tickets in the University Union concourse or outside tomorrow's football game to win a semester's tuition. Tickets are $5 for one ticket or $20 for five tickets.
Students can send their parents off in style, and full-bellied, at the all-you-can-eat buffet style Farewell Breakfast held in the Grand Ballroom from 8 to 11 a.m.
