Right to bear arms

Seth Hancock

Issue date: 9/28/05 Section: Opinion
In the wake of the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina, the law-abiding citizens of New Orleans were told they couldn't protect themselves from the criminals who wanted to exploit the situation. The deputy police chief of New Orleans made this comment on ABC News: "Only law enforcement are allowed to have weapons." He went on to say, "No one will be able to be armed. We are going to take all the weapons."

Now, luckily the people of New Orleans were saved by the National Rifle Association who filed a suit on Sept. 23.

Jay Zainey, the federal judge involved in the case, granted the motion. He required law enforcement to quit confiscating legal firearms and required them to return seized firearms to anyone "who lawfully possessed them, upon presentation of identification and execution of a receipt therefore." Wayne LaPierre, NRA executive vice president said, "This is a significant victory for freedom and for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The court's ruling is instant relief for the victims who now have an effective means of defending themselves from the robbers and rapists that seek to further exploit the remnants of their shattered lives."

LaPierre was right. Taking away firearms from law-abiding citizens takes away their constitutional "right to bear arms." And more importantly, it takes away their right to protect their property and their lives.

Jane Doe, a rape victim who wished to remain anonymous, knows this from first-hand experience. In Larry Elder's film "Michael and Me," Doe recalled her brutal rape. Just days before the rape occurred, she had gone to a gun shop to purchase a firearm. But there was a 10-day waiting period. Little did she know, that 10-day waiting period was very costly. Doe had said the rapist left the room for a short period. At that time, she could have taken her gun, which she should have been allowed to purchase, out of her purse. Armed with just a box cutter, the criminal was allowed to commit this heinous crime.
